On Saturday,April 20, 2013 the Macular Degeneration Association (MDA) will host an educational symposium in Baltimore, MD. This event is designed to give an overview of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), including the progression of the disease and the dangers of vision loss as a result. The symposium will also cover precautionary methods that may delay the onset of AMD and reduce retinal damage.
Registration starts at 8:00 am with Exhibitions. The lectures will begin promptly at 9:00 am. Mid morning refreshments will be provided. At the end of the program you will be able toparticipate in question and answer session.

Larry Hoffheimer
Chairman Macular Degeneration Association Mr. Hoffheimer practiced healthcare law in Washington, DC for 35 years. Prior to that, he served as a federal prosecutor with the United States Department of Justice. During the course of his law career, he represented numerous voluntary health agencies and healthcare professionals. Mr. Hoffheimer formed and led the advocacy effort that resulted in the Congressional Resolution and Presidential Proclamation declaring the 1990s as the Decade of the Brain. He founded the National Foundation for Brain Research, which provided enhanced visibility for neurological disorders. In 2003, Mr. Hoffheimer formed the Macular Degeneration Association (MDA) and moved to Sarasota, Florida where he currently chairs the MDA, including the comprehensive MDA educational initiatives.

David E. Barañano, M.D. Ph.D.
Dr. Barañano received his B.S. from Yale University in 1996. He earned both his M.D. and a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2004. He completed his medicine internship at the University of Maryland – Mercy Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins. He completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at Emory University.

Judith Goldstein, OD
Center for Retina and Macular Disease Dr. Goldstein is Chief of Low Vision Clinical Services and directs clinical and teaching activities at the Center, provides low vision rehabilitative care to patients, and participates in clinical research. A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton, Dr. Goldstein earned her doctorate in Optometry at the State University of New York College of Optometry in 1993 and completed her residency at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center in conjunction with Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins. Specially trained in low vision care and ocular diseases, Dr. Goldstein provided low vision care to patients at her private clinical practice for over a decade while directing the Low Vision Service at University of Maryland. Dr. Goldstein joined Wilmer Eye Institute in 2006 to lead the clinical care and teaching program, and in 2008, developed the John Hopkins accredited Lions Fellowship Training Program. Her current major research activities include the development and management of a 30-site research network to perform ongoing clinical trials in vision rehabilitation.
